Final Cut Movie Opener

Evaluation of Peer Reviews

Image
In my peer reviews, I highlighted the suggestions I am considering to change in green and yellow for what I might consider but is not absolutely necessary. Since my group got such high reviews, I will not be changing much, thankfully!

Week 7 of Editing

Image
After filming the Final Cut of the rough draft film, I wrote my own musical score for the opener and synced it, and downloaded it to the film.

Week 6 of Editing

Image
Editing was a little difficult to do with audio. Sense we had a lot of laughing during production, we had to either mute clips or cut them out, but it actually turned out to be pretty easy to clean up!

Week 5 Filming

Image
Here we are filming an over-the-shoulder shot of our main protagonist. In this, the character is having a long introspective moment regarding events that transpired previously in the film opener.  Here, we are shooting an over-head shot. This was a simple shot and was purely aesthetic and to establish the mood of the film.

Week 4 Filming

Image
We were filming our protagonist during the action scene. The difficulty of this shot was to maintain a good camera quality and audio quality while running.    We started our film with an establishing, up-close shot. Our protagonist is the opening shot. It was hard to keep a straight face and not look intently at the camera lens.

Preparation of staring to film

Actors: The decided actors in our film opener are going to be me, the unsuspecting victim of Horseman; Reid, the friend that the unsuspecting victim calls on the phone when he is spooked; and Jason, who will be playing the murderous Horseman. Costumes: The clothing of the regular people will be nothing out of the ordinary. However, Horseman will be dressed in cut up dirty jeans, a dark hoodie over his head, a styrofoam head with a horse mask on it, and horse hooves on.  Props: Since this is going to be shot in a house, there are no props that are out of the usual or not available to my group-mates. We will need a steak knife, a phone, and a shower towel as our list of props needed to execute this opener.  Locations: The entirety of this opener will be shot at my house. Mostly in the living room area, balcony, and bathroom.  Dates and Times: We are planning on shooting these scenes next weekend (Feb. 19th and 20th).  Scripts: We will only have to write two s...

Initial Storyboard

Image
My group, Tyler, Jason, and I, worked on this together. Jason came up with the idea for our antagonist to be Horseman and I came up with the setting and the protagonist (victim). Tyler came up with the idea for our story to mimic Psycho and Scream.

Movie Opener Brainstorming & Research

Rise:  I liked how personal the opening of this film was. The camera angles, lighting, and introductory music made this contemporary film more relatable to a younger audience. However, the story line was not very evident or clear to me as a viewer. However, the shots were well used especially the last up-close shot to create suspense.  Dear Lover:  The Dear Lover intro followed its theme very well regarding its setting, mood, and message. I personally would not include the interview-like aspect because it simply takes away from the storyline. Although it was a good movie opener, there is not much content me and my group can pull from this opener alone.  Dare To Thrill: I really liked the camera work and the use of music that the opening used. The shots of the car and the chaotic energy that was displayed by this opener successfully pulled me into the story. In addition, the suspense at the end of the story where an unclear plot twist takes place substantiates ...

Film Opening Research #2 - Movie Title

Opening to Joker How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?  There are only a few titles during the opening of the film. They emulate older films with the "old-timey" music to accommodate it. The ending of the title sequence ends with a giant "Joker" text that flashes onto and covers the entire screen.  What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?  The images prioritized in the opening sequence are his makeup, and his tears that fall from his painfully forced smile.  What connotations do the images carry?  The connotations that are carried with these images are that even beneath a smile, we find that this character is severally  despaired and certainly tragic, to the point where the smile is off-putting and very disturbing.  How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?  The genre is reinforced by the symbolic frown of a clown. This symbol is typically used to describe a masked s...

Film Opening Research #1 - Movie Title

Opening to Star Wars:  A New Hope How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?  The famous title sequence of Star Wars includes the name of the movie and the background of where the story begins. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?  The images prioritized were the spacey background and the text that flew over it.  What connotations do the images carry?  The viewer sees the spacey backdrop behind the text which signifies the setting is in space. Along with this and the triumphant music, it gives the connotation of adventure and fantasy.  How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?  Genre is reinforced by the beginning battle and sense of urgency from the soldiers on the ship. This is where we get introduced to our main characters. Leia gives R2D2 the message that contains the blueprints to the Death Star which sets the genre of adventure into motion.  How does the film es...

Film Viewing Practice Essay "Agent Carter"

The camera work in this clip of Agent Carter focuses on the dialogue mostly of the characters. Specifically, the eye-level shots and over-shoulder shots really help engage the audience in the conversation between the two characters in the scenes. Specifically, the over-shoulder shot created an uncomfortable and unsolicited sense of sexual tension of Agent Flinn with Agent Carter. Along with this, misogyny in the workplace. Aside from the conversational aspect in this clip, the camera work also contributes to a lot of the anticipation in this film. For example, when Agent Carter is walking toward the warehouse, it gives her a sense of power and anticipation that she is going to “take care of business.” Anticipation of Steve Roger’s death is also established with a wide, action shot as the land comes closer to his crashing plane. There is also contribution of establishing shots in New York City. This grounds the audience into the new setting of the story.   The editing in this film...

Mise en scene

The movie I watched was Star Wars: A New Hope, directed by George Lucas. The setting of this cinematic masterpiece takes place in an unknown, fictional universe. The reason why the setting of this fictional universe, along with the many abstract and planets in it, is so important because it completely withdraws the viewer from what they know to be reality. With objects and ideas like laser guns and "The Force", setting this movie in a different universe allows the viewer to accept these abstract ideas as true. Who could tell you, confidentially, that there cannot be space laser guns and the ability to move things with your mind in an alternate universe? Nobody.     Regarding the lighting, it all depends on where you are in this universe. If you are on Luke’s home-planet of Tatooine, the lighting is almost blindingly bright. This is due to the fact that it is a desert-oriented planet, and it is close to not just one, but two suns. If you are soaring through the cosmos in...

5 Master Edits with Sound

Image
Sound really helped my scenes convey more meaning in comparison to when they did not have sound. This is exemplified firstly in my contrast scene. The intense and frantic music that I added ( non-diagetic sound ) to the scene created much more of an anxious feeling which conveyed how the stressed student felt when he was trying to catch up on his late work in the scene. It also helped the idea of contrast because, in the second part of that scene, the student is sleeping in class and there is no music at all.          In addition to this, the addition of the elegant string and orchestra music that I added to the symbolism scene created a sense of elegance, intelligence and overall a serious and revolutionary mood. This sound displayed a sort of light bulb moment that was also being illustrated on the scene.          Furthermore, the voice over (...
