5 Master Edits in a Professional Film

Simultaneously

In this scene of Batman Begins, directed by Christopher Nolan, simultaneously is demonstrated as Bruce, our main character, falls through a well at the beginning of the movie. While this is happening, we see Rachel, Bruce's childhood friend, run to her and Bruce's parents for help. We observe Bruce being attacked by bats from the cave and Rachel at the same time getting an adult to help Bruce. The use of the cut in between these scenes allows the viewer to subconsciously understand that these two scenes are not happening chronologically, but are happening simultaneously. This scene could also be used for contrast because the viewer observes how the scene goes from rather quite and unsuspecting to frantic due to the bats attacking Bruce.

                                                                           Leitmotif

In these scenes, the viewer observes a common theme throughout the clips: fear. In the first of these scenes, we see that the trainer is looking down at Bruce proclaiming that Bruce is afraid but not of him. This makes the viewer beg the question: what is Bruce afraid of? In the rest of the scenes, the viewer sees how Bruce’s family was killed because Bruce was afraid of the Opera scene. This initial fear was demonstrated in the opening scene as well when Bruce falls into the well. All of these scenes together create the leitmotif of Bruce’s fear; something we also don’t get clarity on until the end of the movie entirely.

                                                                        Symbolism

In this clip of the movie, the viewer sees that the flower that Bruce must carry up the mountain, while still maintain the flower’s life and his life, in the freezing cold. To me, this flower symbolizes Bruce’s spirit, dedication, and motivation to get over the “mountain.” In addition to the flower, I believe that the mountain symbolizes the path and obstacles Bruce has in front of him. With this in mind, it is clear to see that both the flower and the mountain are both symbolizes that the editor and director used to tie these scenes, and the plot line, together.
